Why Don’t Antibiotics Treat The Flu?

Why Don’t Antibiotics Treat The Flu?

This is actually quite simple. The flu is caused by a virus. Actually, the common cold is caused by a virus as well. A virus is inherently different than a bacteria in its structure, the way it replicates and the way it affects your body. Antibiotics kill bacteria, not viruses, so they obviously won’t kill the flu bug.

I’m sure some of you have been prescribed antibiotics for the flu and found that they actually helped. The reason for this is that when you have the flu and you either don’t have a healthy immune system or you don’t support your immune system to fight off the virus, you can develop a secondary bacterial infection. The antibiotic can kill the bacteria which gives your immune system a chance to catch up and kill that darn virus.

Two keys to dealing with the flu are 1. Have a healthy immune system to begin with and 2. Support your body with immune stimulants and natural anti-virals when you start to get sick.

Stay tuned until next week for my favorite ways to treat the flu!
